Tree Legacy Fund

ree

Trees are without question a big part of what makes The Briars Golf Club a beautiful and challenging course to play. The health of our trees is important today, and for the future. Trees have many benefits to the environment and wildlife, and are also recognized today as an important store of carbon from the atmosphere as they grow.

In the 1960's the Golf Club lost all their elm trees due to a disease known as Dutch Elm Disease. You can see these large trees in the old club photos on the walls of the club house. In a matter of a few years they had died and had to be removed. Over the next 10 years the golf club planted many young trees to replace the elms, and these young trees have grown to be large magnificent trees today.

In approximately 2015 the white ash trees at the Golf Club started to show signs of infestation from the Emerald Ash Borer. This non-native insect has devastated ash tree populations in North America. In South and Central Ontario's deciduous forests, where ash trees are a common species, millions of trees have died. At the Briars we have removed many ash trees annually over the past 5+ years. The trees we are planting are native, golf course friendly, and healthy. We are positioning the new trees in areas that are strategic to the golf course, enhance the beauty, and friendly to growing turf.

We also have many old trees which are showing their age and require professional pruning, feeding, treatment for infestation, and in some cases removal/replacement.

Members and non-members can NOW participate in the Briars Golf Tree Legacy Fund. We will be installing a large plaque within the clubhouse to recognize all donors/donations in excess of $500. Donations can be made in memory of a loved one or to simply add to the beauty of our wonderful golf course. Please contact Frank Campanelli if you are interested, or have any questions.
